WHY IS EARTHQUAKE RETROFITTING DONE?
Earthquake retrofitting, also known as seismic retrofitting, is done in order to prevent a house from moving off of its foundation due to seismic activity. It secures the house to the foundation and strengthens the structure, therefore making it more resistant to earthquakes.
A house that is not retrofitted has a much higher chance of being damaged or collapsing due to seismic activity. Retrofitting can be especially beneficial for a home that already needs any form of foundation repair.
HOW IS EARTHQUAKE RETROFITTING DONE?
There are various methods of seismically retrofitting a house in order to be less vulnerable to earthquakes. This is based on the type home and foundation.
Generally, this is done by bolting the house to the foundation with metal plates that hold everything in place. The idea is to secure the house down firmly onto the foundation in order to hold everything together tightly in case of a drastic earthquake.
