California Earthquake Retrofit Program 2021

Earthquake Brace and Bolt Grant

The California Earthquake Retrofit Program of 2021 is known as the Brace and Bolt grant. It is offered by the California Earthquake Authority (CEA) in order to provide homeowners with up to $3,000 of funding for seismically retrofitting their homes.

The retrofit must be in compliance with the California Chapter A3 Building Code in order to qualify for the program. There are other various requirements that homeowners must meet in order to be eligible for the grant.

The purpose of this type of retrofit is to improve the structural integrity of a home by fastening the home to it’s foundation in order to prevent it from sliding off due to seismic activity.

Homeowner Requirements to Qualify for the California Earthquake Retrofit Program 2021

The following are just some of the requirements that homeowners must meet in order to qualify for this California earthquake retrofit program in 2021.

  • Must have a valid CEA insurance policy for the home they want to retrofit.
  • Must own a home that was constructed before 1980.
  • Household annual income must not exceed $72,080.
  • The house must have a continuous perimeter foundation.
  • The house must not already be retrofitted by brace and bolt prior to qualifying for the program.
  • A building permit for the job has to be issued after being accepted into the program.
  • The permit must state that the retrofit is in accordance with building code chapter A3.
  • The work must also include strapping and bracing any and all water heaters on the property.
  • The work must be done by a licensed contractor in California with a type A or B license in order for labor to be reimbursed.
  • The property must successfully pass a final inspection by an inspector in order to confirm that the work was done in accordance with Building Code Chapter A3.
  • The job may not receive funding from another grant.
  • If the job exceeds the $3,000 grant provided by the CEA, the homeowner is responsible for any additional costs.

Additional Financial Benefit of Bracing & Bolting a House

Another benefit of earthquake bracing and bolting is that you can save money on earthquake insurance. You can save up to 25% on your earthquake insurance cost.

As a result, bracing and bolting house can pay itself off over time based on insurance savings. Although, there are various requirements that a house must meet in order to qualify for the insurance savings.

Some of the requirements for saving money on earthquake insurance due to retrofitting include the following:

  • The house must have been constructed before 1980.
  • The house must be a wood frame construction.
  • The house must be on a raised foundation or other type of foundation that is not entirely concrete slab.
  • The brace and bolt job must be within the standards set by California.
